Nun More Fun

They say running can be habit-forming, and yesterday’s Run for the Nun 5k in Lexington was no exception. Six hundred fifty runners and walkers (140 more than last year) showed up to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church for the 23rd installment of this Kentucky running tradition.

Although the race attracted some fierce competitors, it was still mainly all about creating a fun atmosphere. Some of the team names included Nun Faster and the Bad Habits. Volunteers (men, by the way) dressed as nuns were stationed along the course and waved rulers instructing runners where to turn as they cheered us all on. The event’s signature feature is a Running Nun, who runs the course in full habit and sneakers. Anyone who beats him is awarded a special prize. Adding to the fun this year were several new features: chip timing from 3 Way Racing, a 1-mile Fun Run, and a team competition.

Not only did RRP promote the race, but I also participated in the fun. Personally, it was my best 5k ever. I took second in my age group and got a PR of 21:05. I was also a member of BLUEgrass Runners, who took first in the team competition. Adding the team component really provided some extra fun, giving the race more of a cross country feel. I highly recommend that any race looking to create more interest add a team option.

Overall, this was the perfect was the perfect way to kick off the weekend. It was a pleasure to promote and run such a fun and well-organized event. I have to say, the Run for the Nun is one of Lexington’s most enjoyable races, bar nun.
